Remove any large debris from the pool with a pool net. This prevent leaves, twigs and other objects from collecting at the bottom of the pool, where they cause stains, or from getting jammed in the filter.

  • 2

Clean out your filter regularly in accordance with the filter instructions. If a filter gets clogged, it will no longer be able to function properly, and the motor can burn out.

  • 3

Use a scrub brush to clean the tiles around the waterline, where deposits tend to form.

  • 4

Run your pool filter six to eight hours a day to keep the water properly cleaned of dirt and debris.

  • 5

Vacuum the bottom of the pool floor with a pool vacuum to remove larger dirt from the water that you couldn’t get out with the net.

  • 6

Mix chlorine into your pool water regularly, in accordance with instructions for your particular pool, to keep the water sanitized and free of microorganisms. Normal chlorine levels are 1 to 3 parts per million. Test the water with a water testing kit to verify your water has the appropriate pH level of 7.2 to 7.6. Add pH increaser or pH decreaser (available at pool supply stores) to bring the pH into balance.

  • 7

Place a pool cover over the pool when it is not in use. The cover prevents debris, animals and children from falling into the water and retains heat if your pool has a heater.
