How to Select Porcelain Floor Tile

  • Measure the area where you plan to install the porcelain floor tile. This will give you an idea of how much tile you need to purchase to cover the area. Depending on where you purchase your tile, it can come in different sizes. Always bring your measurements with you when looking at tile.

  • Know what you can spend. Porcelain tile varies in price. For one square foot, you might pay anywhere from $1.75 to $4 or more. Making a budget will help you narrow down your choices and choose a porcelain tile that fits your lifestyle, décor and wallet.
  • Research the difference between full-body porcelain tile and glazed porcelain tile. Each offers a certain look that may or may not be right for your home’s décor. Generally, the glazed tile has a coating on the surface that can make the tile appear a different color. The full-body tile, also known as unglazed, is colored with a pigment that’s mixed throughout the clay as it’s formed, giving it a very consistent look.

  •

  • Make your selection based partly on the area where you plan to install the tile. All porcelain tile is very durable, but if you plan to use it in an area that receives a lot of moisture, such as a patio or laundry room, you should select a kind that has a special surface finish to make the tile even more resistant to moisture. Examples include a stone cleft or variegated finish.
  • Check out the porcelain tile in person. Porcelain can look much different in a picture than it does in person. The color you choose will need to match your home’s décor, so you want to make sure you know what the exact color is. If possible, get a sample of the porcelain tile you’re considering, and look at the color in the room you plan to install it in at different times of the day. Depending on the amount of sunlight and artificial light, both glazed and unglazed tiles can appear to be a different color than they did in the store or in a picture.
