Tile is a versatile and popular building material and art medium. The world of tiles is diverse. Before embarking on any project you need to determine which ceramic tiles (or non-ceramic tiles) are best for your project. You need to consider following factors: design, glaze, shape, size and material.
Glazes are rated on a 0 to 5 scale. 0 is purely decorative, 1 is non-traffic (for the wall) 2 is light traffic (the bathroom) 3 is residential (kitchen flooring, countertops) 4 is light commercial (entry ways, offices) and 5 is high traffic (malls). Make sure to ask about a tile’s glaze before using it; you don’t want to end up with decorative tiles on your floor because they will wear out very fast.
When weighing porcelain tiles and ceramic remember that porcelain tiles have much lower water abruption rate than ceramic tiles. That means they can be exposed to water without being damaged. Ceramic tiles can be damaged by too much water exposure, especially if that water then freezes. This is why porcelain tiles are ideal for outdoor fountain and the like.
When tiling an area with many curves you should use mosaic tiles. They are small so they are ideal for capturing the counters of a rounded surface.
