Living Room Decoration Themes

Posted By on December 21, 2012

There was a time when people considered the living room a place for only formal gatherings, and kept the furniture covered and doors shut most of the time. These days, your living room probably sees the most entertaining and the most day-to-day traffic. When decorating your living room, consider its multiple uses as well as your style.

Traditional Themes

  • The most traditional living room themes incorporate period pieces for a more formal look. Early American, Colonial and primitive styles, with their dark-stained wooden furniture, gold hardware accents and antique white walls fit this approach. Classic French and Italian decor also have a traditional side, the first featuring skinny-leg furnishings and ornately patterned upholstery and the second offering leather upholstery, architectural features such as columns and arches, and marble and stone finishes. Traditional flooring options include stained hardwood, weathered wide plank wood, marble tile and Oriental rugs in jewel tones.

Modern Themes

  • Modern living rooms have a more open and casual look than their traditional counterparts. Contemporary minimalist living rooms eschew clutter and ornamentation for angular lines, geometric shapes, metal accents and sleek surfaces. Midcentury modern living rooms have a homier touch, with wood grain cabinetry, modular furnishings and signature pieces such as Charles Eames chairs. The bohemian modern look flies in the face of the simpler modern looks, integrating an eclectic mix of flea market finds, stacks of art, family heirlooms and mass-produced items.

Shabby Chic Themes

  • Shabby chic living rooms embrace the weathered and the timeworn, the distressed and the damaged, be it inflicted by the passage of time or applied with a faux finish. The original shabby chic look centered on icy pastels such as pale pink, pistachio, lavender, faded yellow and barely blue, as well as a host of antique whites. However, other shabby styles have come to the forefront, most notably the Wabi-Sabi look that leaves the pastels and ornamental kitsch behind for something more understated, like a well-worn wooden dining room table painted a simple white. Cottage style warms up the look with natural finishes and materials such as bamboo mats, wicker furniture and faded cotton textiles. The French country look brings in more color and patterns like fleur-de-lis trim on walls, cornflower blue textiles, window treatments in French toile and an armoire with a hand-painted scene on the doors.
