Tile Design Ideas for a Living Room Floor

Posted By on March 22, 2013

The living room serves as the entertainment hub of your home, where family and guests are most likely to gather. And in most homes, the entryway opens directly on the living room, presenting people with the first impression of your home’s interior. The living room floor can define the design standard for the entire room, and tile floors allow you to set the tone and introduce your design aesthetic–funky, homey, elegant, rustic or artistic–in a friendly, uncluttered way. Your furnishings and decor should work with the flooring to create a look that is uniquely you, a reflection of your way of life, personality and comfort level.

Checkerboard

  • Checkerboard tile floors use alternating colors to create an all-over design resembling a checkerboard. For living rooms, this is generally accomplished using subtle color variations as opposed to stark contrast. The exception to this is a retro black-and-white 1950s diner or art deco style, where bold colors and strong statements mesh with the overall home decor.

Mosaic

  • Mosaic design uses tile in different colors and shapes to create a visual image. Handmade mosaic tile designs take considerable artistry and skill but result in impressive, unique floors. Ready-made mosaic designs laid out on mesh backing are available for people who want the look but don’t have the artistic skill or the time. The living room is a great place to put a mosaic tile floor because almost everyone who enters your home will see it.

Border

  • To create a border around your living room using tile, choose tiles in a single solid color for the center of the room and a contrasting or patterned tile for the outside border. To add more visual interest, use a different shape for the border; for example, large square tiles in the center and narrow rectangular tiles for the border. This works particularly well for tiled floors that will be covered by a rug, since the design interest is visible only at the edges of the room, or for a sunken living room, where the edges are sharply defined.

Rustic

  • To achieve a rustic look, consider Mexican saltillo-style tile. Choose a reddish tile with color variations, and use different sizes and shapes to create large design blocks. Saltillo-tile floors are often set at an angle to the entryway, so it looks as though the floor is laid out in diamond shapes. This floor tile design works well with leather and rustic furniture and natural accents such as field stone and wood, but can also be incorporated into a more updated, modern casual look.
