How to Pick Pool Tiles?

Pool tiles are an alternative interior surface to traditional vinyl pool liners. Although the tiles are often more expensive and require a somewhat lengthy installation, they create a special look for your pool and swimming experience. Research pool tiles prior to selecting new ones. It is easy to walk into a store and simply pick the nicest-looking tile. However, this may not be the best tile for your particular swimming pool.

1. Purchase only pool-grade tiles that are weather resistant and can withstand the harsh chemicals used to keep pool water clean. Ensure the tile will work for your type of swimming pool. For example, standard pool tiles may not work for saltwater pools, as the water in these pools is more corrosive.

2. Ask about color fade for different types of tile. Tiles above the water line may fade more quickly (or differently) than those under the water.

3. Select a smaller tile to make your pool look larger. Most pool tile comes in 6-by-6-inch pieces and has a smooth surface, which allows you to clean off scale and water buildup easily, and limits the growth of mildew on the tile. Tile sizes above 8 by 8 inches may result in an awkward or smaller look for your pool.

4. Consider your tastes and the overall landscape around the pool when selecting pool tile colors. For example, if you want a more natural look to your pool, such as that of a lagoon, you may want to select brown or green tiles over yellow and blue colored tiles.

5. Consider mixing solid-colored tiles with a design tile. In terms of dark or heavy design tiles, less is more. Using too many design tiles can make it harder to clean your water, as the reflection from the tile can reduce water clarity. Avoid dark tiles in extremely warm climates, as they can heat the water by attracting heat from the sun.
