Ceramic floor tiles represent one of the most versatile and durable floors in the market today. They have been around for many years and people have installed them in every room of their homes. They come in a variety of styles and colors. One of the types of ceramic tile that is really becoming popular is tile that looks like wood. Wood-look ceramic tile comes in many different styles of wood as well. Here are the basics of ceramic floor tiles that look like wood.

Basics

Ceramic floor tile that looks like wood has become more realistic than ever. Most people can not tell the difference between it and wood until they get down and feel it. The tiles come in a rectangular shape that actually looks like a board of hardwood. You butt the tiles right up against each other so that there is a very small grout line. This helps it look more like a real hardwood floor as well.

 Benefits of Wood-Look Ceramic
  • Scratch resistant- One of the biggest problems with real hardwood is that it is soft. You can scratch hardwood very easily with normal wear and tear. Walking across some species of wood floors with high heels on is enough to dent it. With ceramic tile, you never have to worry about that. It is very hard and resists scratches and dents much better than wood.
  • Waterproof- With ceramic tile, you can get it wet and there will never be any issues with it. You can mop the floor, spill your drink all over it, and you will not be able to tell a difference. If you do that on a wood floor, the floor could buckle and be ruined. This makes it much easier to live on than a wood floor as you do not have to be as careful.
  • Permanent flooring- One reason that people get real hardwood is because it is considered permanent flooring. Many other options like vinyl or laminate are considered floor covering as it is not permanently attached to the sub floor. Tile is attached to the sub floor and will last for many years.

Precautions

While ceramic tile that looks like wood can make a great floor, there are a few things that you will want to watch out for. Ceramic tile can be cracked if you drop something heavy on it. Therefore, if you are in the kitchen and you drop an iron skillet, you could very well crack one of the tiles. When you install the tiles, you should make sure that you have a few extra to keep somewhere in the house. Matching the tile will be next to impossible a few years down the road.

Something else that you might want to consider is putting a radiant heating system underneath the tile. If you have ever lived on ceramic tile before, you know that it can get very cold in the winter. Putting a radiant heating system under the tile can really help to warm the floor and make it more comfortable to walk on.
