How to Install Ceramic Tile With Adhesives

Instructions

    • 1

Do a dry run with the tile by placing it on the floor without adhesive. This will help you to decide on a flooring layout without permanently placing the tile on the floor. Use tile spacers to account for grout joint spacing. Adjust the tiles until you are happy with your layout. Mark the floor with a pencil to help you remember a starting point when you install the tile.

Lay a thin set mortar tile adhesive on the sub floor. Place the mortar on the floor with a notched trowel. Spread the mortar with the flat edge of the trowel and then scrape away the excess with the notched edge of the trowel. Doing this leaves just enough adhesive on the floor for perfect adhesion.

    • 3

Place the tiles into the tile adhesive. Start at the marked starting point and press each tile into the mortar. Place a tile spacer between tiles. Use a tile saw to cut edge tiles that need to be trimmed. Let the thin set mortar tile adhesive dry overnight.

Remove the tile spacers from between the tiles. Apply the grout to the tile with a rubber grout float. Working in a diagonal direction, use the float to remove the excess grout from the tile.

    • 5

Wipe the grout from the top of the tiles with a damp sponge. Wait until the grout has been in place for 30 minutes. After the grout has had a chance to sit, wipe away the extra with a sponge. Keep a bucket of water handy to rinse the sponge periodically. Let the grout dry 48 hours before returning the floor to everyday use.
