How to Apply Bullnose Tile

Posted By on January 11, 2013

Bullnose tile is finished along one edge with a smooth, curved shape, so it can sit with that side open against a wall or other span instead of butting up to a neighboring tile. It’s typically used to border areas that have standard tile on them but that don’t cover the whole wall, like a backsplash or a bath half-wall. Start with a firm, flat wall.

Instructions

1. Lightly sand the wall along the edge of the area where you’re going to apply the bullnose, taking off any gloss or grime.

2. Measure along the edge and find the middle, using a tape measure. Mark it with your pencil, on the wall.

3.

Spread tile adhesive over the back of a bullnose tile with your notched trowel, coating the back completely

4. Press the first bullnose tile to the wall, on either side of the center line, with the finished side facing outward toward the open wall and the other side next to the area you’re bordering. Set two spacers between the tile and the area you’re bordering.

5. Set additional tiles next to the first one, side by side, building across the edge of the area being bordered. Line them up so the finished edges form a straight line. Put spacers between all of them.

6. Cut the last tiles on either end on your tile cutter to fit. Hang them in the same manner. Let the tiles set overnight and pull out the spacers.

7. Spread grout over the bullnose tiles, forcing the grout into the spaces with a grout float. Wipe up the excess grout with a damp sponge.
