Choosing the Tile

  • There are hundreds of different kinds of pool tiles in all types of materials and finishes. This includes glass and mosaic tiles, simple ceramic and porcelain tiles. There are colorful tiles made to create dolphins and sea creatures. You can do just about anything your imagination and budget allows. When you select a tile be certain to find one that is very strong and won’t chip. For the deck you should find textured patterns that have some grip and won’t slip. Stone tiles are also an excellent choice here. For inside the pool, glass and smooth surface tiles are a great choice.

The Grout

  • When installing tile in a swimming pool the most important choice you can make is the grout. There are grouts especially made for swimming pools, so when you buy select only pool tile grout. This is formulated to resist water and chlorine. It is also partially synthetic.

Then decide which type you want: quick set or slow set. The advantage of quick set pool grout is you can work fast, and your tiles won’t slide out of place while they dry. Slow set allows you to make a few mistakes, and you can work slower without fear of the grout hardening before you have time to set the tiles. Slow set is harder to use on vertical areas.

Doing the Installing

  • When you install pool tiles make a plan first and stick to it. First, place the tiles on the pool where you want them to go without grout just to be sure that is the design and pattern you like. Then clear out any remaining grout left in the area and make sure it is free of dust and dirt. When you are ready to start, grout a small area using a trowel, and then set the tiles in place. Use small plastic spacers between them and set your tiles deep into the grout so no water can slip behind them.
