How To Clean Porcelain Tiles

Posted By on November 23, 2012

Cleaning porcelain tile is not as simple as one may believe. Don’t believe what you see in the paper towel commercials; cleaning porcelain is a tricky game, and your best tactic is likely dictated by the specific variety of porcelain you have.

If you have a glazed porcelain tile, you can clean it much in the same manner you would clean ceramic tile. Going to any hardware store that provides cleaning chemicals, you’ll find products specifically designed to clean ceramic tile and the grout between them; these products will work very efficiently with a glazed porcelain tile floor or wall.

If your porcelain flooring is made of through body or porous tiles, we recommend using some sort of alkaline cleaning solution to start. The reason for this is that porus porcelain tiles include materials that will “suck in” a basic cleaning solution like a sponge in water, damaging it beyond repair. These alkaline cleaning solutions are typically specific for cleaning porcelain tile and grout, in that they won’t be absorbed by the porcelain tiles.

Make sure that the alkaline cleaning solution (mixed with very warm water) is not allowed to dry on the tiles. Let it dwell for approximately 20 minutes, scrub, and remove. A wet vacuum is recommended to finish the job, as a means for rinsing and picking up any remaining residue or dirt.

By taking these cautious, yet easy steps when cleaning your porcelain tiles, you’ll ensure your flooring looks brand new months, and even years after installation
