How to Mix Flooring in Your Home?(6/7/2013)

It is common to mix several different types of flooring in a home. You may have marble in your entryway, hardwood floors in your living room and carpet in the bedrooms. In order to create a cohesive design, choose flooring that will transition well from one room to the next. In addition, installing flooring transitions will help keep flooring protected and prevent potential falls and accidents when people are walking through your home.

1 Select the flooring. In order to properly mix flooring in your home, the colors should be complementary, even if the materials used are widely different. For example, if you have a dark wood flooring, and also wish to use marble tile, the color of the tile should harmonize with the color of the wood.

2 Decide which areas of the home will have which flooring. Kitchens and baths do best with marble, vinyl or laminate flooring. Entrance ways, mudrooms and laundry rooms are best suited for ceramic tile, vinyl or linoleum flooring, which is easy to maintain and keep clean. Bedrooms, while they may have wood flooring, are best suited for carpeting, especially if you live in a colder climate. Cold wood floors are not typically welcome under bare feet in the morning. In addition, wood floors can become damaged from heavy bedroom furniture. Other rooms in the home, such as living areas, are suitable for hardwood, carpeting or even slate tile, depending on your personal preferences.

3 Lay the flooring. Pick a room to start. If you are redoing one room in your home, you will only have to worry about transitioning in that one space. However, if you are redoing all of the floors in your home, start first with the rooms that you have chosen to do in tile, vinyl or linoleum. This is because these types of flooring are generally slimmer in thickness than carpet or wood, and this will affect how you install your transition strips.

4 Add transition strips between types of flooring. These strips not only provide safety, to cover raised edges, but they also help protect the flooring from damage and serve as a way to easily change the material you are using for your floors. Transition strips are available in metal or wood, and some are intended for transitioning between flooring of different heights. They should be properly installed to ensure that they are flush with the flooring on both sides to prevent tripping.
